Curriculum Intent

Learning a modern foreign language broadens people’s understanding of the world. It encourages curiosity to learnto appreciate other cultures, contributes to mutual understanding and personalfulfilment.

That’s why our vision at The Charter School East Dulwich is that languages are for life, whether for work orleisure.

By studying Spanish, students learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. We work hard to develop students who are confident in communicating in a foreignlanguage, have enthusiasm for learning and a desire to be global citizens.Through varied and frequent practice students will develop strong communicationskills and accuracy in their use of the language.

Key Stage 3

In KS3, students learn tocommunicate about their daily life. In Year 7, students develop their abilityto describe themselves and their family, talk about their school life and theirinterest in their free time. In Year 8, students learn to make and answerinvitations to go out, describe past events and talk about holidays. In Year 9,students study the topics of holidays, school and family, friends and rolemodels. Students learn how to apply grammar to a wide variety of content.

Students are assessed at the endof each topic, completing listening, reading, writing and speaking assessments.

Key Stage 4

In Year 10 Spanish, students learnto communicate around the topics of free time, local area and celebrations.

They are assessed on two to threeskills at the end of each topic - listening, reading and writing. At the end ofthe year, they also sit their first mock speaking exam.

In Year 11, Spanish students turntheir attention to future plans and world issues. Students are assessed onthree or four skills in both of the mock exams (in November and February)

Key Stage 5

Spanish A Level allows students todevelop their linguistic skills to an advanced level through rigorous practiceof the language in the classroom and at home.

Studying Spanish A Level alsooffers the chance to be immersed in the literature and films of the Frenchspeaking world, through looking at iconic works which span the centuries.

At the same time, our studentshave the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of contemporary topicsrelated to the societies of Spanish speaking countries such as the changingstructures of modern families, the cyberworld, the importance of volunteer workand the artistic culture of Spanish speaking countries through heritage, musicand cinema.
