Science

At The Charter School East Dulwich, our science curriculum is rich in knowledge, helping all learners flourish

Curriculum Intent

Our vision is to secure a deep level of scientific literacy and independent inquiry and to promote curiosity and understanding in the world of science around them. We want pupils to be able to relate to science, find meaning and better understand all aspects of science.

We know that with strong teaching and a challenging curriculum our vision for science can be achieved.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3 science students build upon the five key concepts in science - cells, interdependence, forces, particles and energy. Investigative skills are learned and developed in all lessons. Students have four one hour lessons a week delivered in laboratory classrooms. Within the very first week of Science in year 7, students will have learnt how to operate a bunsen burner and will begin to understand the basics of scientific enquiry.

By the end of year 9, students will have developed a strong grasp of the five core concepts and understand the links between them, and the links between Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

Key Stage 4

At The Charter School East Dulwich we offer GCSE Science combined and GCSE Science triple.Within both course structures students will learn the full scientific enquiry method from planning, to carrying out an experiment to making conclusions and evaluating their methods.

The GCSE curriculum is strengthened massively by our team's subject specialisms, we have a full team of chemists, biologists and physicists.

Students learn about technical science and everyday science. This equips all students with a firm understanding of the scientific world around them and serves as an excellent foundation for students who go on to study A levels in science.

As well as teaching scientific knowledge, the GCSE Science course also reinforces mathematical concepts including statistics and algebra. Students develop their English language skills by learning how to write persuasively and to use evidence to support explanations.

Key Stage 5

We offer A level courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics at our sixth form.

Biology

We explore all aspects of living things. Starting with the smallest biological molecules such as lipids and DNA, we move onto larger structures by studying whole organisms both human and plant based. The course also covers immunity, genetics, biotechnology, and biodiversity. A Level Biology has strong links to both Maths and Chemistry.

Chemistry

We dig deeper into why chemical reactions happen, and students will develop further understanding of many different reaction types. The course covers more on the periodic table, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and analytical chemistry.

Physics

This is the best subject to study if you want to know why most things happen. Some scientists argue that all science stems from Physics! In this course we cover many models and theories and explore these using practical tests to support our mathematical equations.
