Learning a modern foreign language broadens people’s understanding of the world. It encourages curiosity to learn to appreciate other cultures, contributes to mutual understanding and personal fulfillment.
That’s why our vision at The Charter School East Dulwich is that languages are for life, whether for work or leisure.
By studying French students learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. We work hard to develop students who are confident in communicating in a foreign language, have enthusiasm for learning and a desire to be global citizens.Through varied and frequent practice students will develop strong communication skills and accuracy in their use of the language.
In KS3, students learn to communicate about their daily life. In Year 7, students develop their ability to describe themselves and their family, talk about their school life and their interest in their free time.
In Year 8, students learn to make and answer invitations to go out, describe past events and talk about holidays.
In Year 9, students start exploring the GCSE topics of free time and local area, as well as family, friends and role models for French. Students learn how to apply grammar to a wide variety of content.
Students are assessed at the end of each topic, completing listening, reading, writing and speaking assessments.
In Year 10 French, students study how to discuss celebrations, school life and future plans.
They are assessed on two to three skills at the end of each topic - listening, reading and writing. At the end of the year, they also sit their first mock speaking exam.
In Year 11 French, students turn their attention to the study of holidays and world issues.
French A Level allows students todevelop their linguistic skills to an advanced level through rigorous practice of the language in the classroom and at home.
Studying French A Level also offers the chance to be immersed in the literature and films of the French speaking world, through looking at iconic works which span the centuries.
At the same time, our students have the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of contemporary topics related to the societies of French speaking countries such as the changing structures of modern families, the cyberworld, the importance of volunteer work and the artistic culture of French speaking countries through heritage, music and cinema.
