Black History Month at TCSED

October 8, 2024

Black History Month at TCSED got off to a great start last week, with students and teachers enjoying two guest speaker talks...

Year 11 Assembly Talk with Southwark Councillor Jasmine Ali

Our Year 11 students were privileged to hear from Councillor Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Refugees during a special Black History Month assembly. Cllr Ali spoke passionately about the rich diversity in Southwark, highlighting the vibrant mix of cultures among residents and local leadership. She emphasised the importance of reclaiming narratives, celebrating Black history, and honouring the heritage that shapes our community today.

Inspiring Your Future: A Talk by Councillor Evelyn Akoto

Our Year 12 Politics students were privileged to hear from Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Evelyn Akoto for Black History Month. Cllr Evelyn spoke passionately about future aspirations and being the change we want to see in our communities. Her talk inspired students to consider a career in politics, reflect on how Black history is not just a celebration of the past but a powerful influence on the present and future.

Black History Month has arrived in the library and there is a lot to see!

Students can explore our exciting non-fiction display for information on black history as well as the book displays on every table and the shelves where we are highlighting black authorship this month (look out for the flags!) Students can also follow our window timeline, showcasing poetry about famous black figures from different historical eras.

Our Library Portal features a special dashboard this month with additional videos, quizzes and website links to further explore this fascinating topic…you can access the portal HERE
