Care & Support

A place to belong

We are a caring school and offer a range of pastoral and learning support to pupils.

Every pupil starts each day with their tutor group. Your child’s tutor will take a close interest in your child’s wellbeing as well as their learning, and is your regular point of contact. You can also download our Safeguarding policy, which you will find on our policies page.

We also provide an excellent counselling service for those students who may need additional support.

Our Values

Pastoral Team

Our Pastoral Managers play a vital role in the pastoral care of our students. They work closely with our Year Leaders to promote educational success and outstanding outcomes for all students. They encourage and support students including vulnerable learners to develop positive attitudes and behaviours towards learning.

Our Pastoral Managers support our student’s pastoral, wellbeing, social and emotional needs. Their role involves mentoring students, supporting with restoratives between staff and students, meeting with parents and liaising with external agencies amongst many other responsibilities.

Form groups

All students will have a form group headed by a Form Tutor. The Form Tutor will provide students with a consistent relationship of support, guidance and where necessary, challenge.

Students will see their Form Tutor every day to receive social, moral, spiritual and civic education. Form Tutors will also be responsible for guided reading activities as we cultivate high standards of literacy across our school. We anticipate that Form Tutors will stay with their form groups as they progress through the School.

Support & nurture

We all find learning challenging at one point or another. At The Charter School East Dulwich we are committed to helping our students through those periods.

Our commitment to student support is guided by the following principles:

  • Inclusion and support is every student’s entitlement and every adult’s responsibility.
  • Well-tailored support can help any student to make progress in any aspect of their learning.
  • Early identification of needs and careful monitoring of progress is essential to ensuring that the right support is provided at all times.
  • Proactive intervention is always preferable to reactive remediation.

Transition

Transitioning from primary to secondary school can be daunting, especially for students who haven't yet met national achievement standards or are vulnerable. When a child enrols, we assess these students to determine if they would benefit from our Nurture Group, where they receive personalised support through small group sessions or one-on-one mentoring.

While prioritising Literacy and Numeracy, we ensure access to the broader curriculum. Students can stay in the Nurture Group as long as necessary, but our aim is full integration into mainstream school life, tailored to each child's pace.
